Instrument TESTING Information

How we select instruments at Milwee Middle School:
We offer two options for students and parents to find out which instrument will be the best fit for your student and family.

*PREFERRED* Option 1, INSTRUMENT TEST DRIVE consultation: In order to help get through every student in time, we ask as many students and parents as possible to sign up for a before school  consultation or after school instrument consultation. The instrument test drive consultation lasts one hour and takes place before and during the first two weeks of school. Students must be accompanied by a parent at these consultations. We will test each of the main instruments, coaching your student on how to make the correct embouchure to make a sound. I also explain how each instrument works (what supplies you need and about how much it is to rent) to parents as they watch us go through each instrument. This method is preferred as it’s a great opportunity to meet you, and you get to see your student go through the testing process!
CLICK HERE to sign up for a Consultation
This is the BEST way to get your student tested and approved for an instrument in our program. Parents MUST be with the student for this process as it is a collaborative (and BIG!) decision.

Option 2, in class testing: Starting on Thursday, August 11th, we will begin testing all students on instruments in class. We generally test one instrument per day (two on block days), and usually by the middle of the second school week, most students will know what instrument they will be learning in our band! After we select our instruments, students will receive a form on what they will need for their specific instrument. You will receive more information concerning how to procure an instrument at the virtual  meeting on August 11th. Please plan on attending via computer/phone/internet browser.

Beginning Band Informational Parent Meeting (Student attendance strongly suggested, but optional)

The most difficult part of the year for new students and parents is the very beginning of the school year as there are many changes in academics, responsibility, and schedule from elementary school. Joining a band program can also seem daunting as there are band specific procedures to review in order for us to achieve success. We have to find the instrument that each student will play in the two weeks of school, order band uniforms, coordinate volunteers and parent help, and fill out some necessary paperwork exclusive to the band.

In order to help facilitate this process, there is an important meeting that will give you an opportunity to learn how the band program at Milwee works and how to procure the proper instrument for your student.
I understand it may be difficult to make arrangements on such short notice, our band appreciates you doing your best to make this meeting!

Learn how to procure your instrument, plus many answers for questions about band.
Thursday, August 11th at 7pm via WebEx - Link will be sent out next week.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this email.
I can’t wait to get this school year started! Welcome to the best family you’ll find at Milwee!

Just reminder that our Spring Concert for all students is on Thursday, May 12th at 6:30pm in the Lyman High School Auditorium. Jazz Band Report time is 5:30pm, everyone else’s report time is 6pm: beginning band will go directly to the stage and Concert/Symphonic band students will assist getting ready for the concert or sit in the auditorium with their families plus instrument and music in hand.

Students should NOT to bring their instrument case into the auditorium this concert -- students should keep their instrument cases in the car and only bring their instrument and music into the auditorium.

All students are to wear the same uniform that was utilized to at the Winter Concert.
For beginners,  please wear the green Milwee Band T-Shirt with black pants, black socks, black shoes, and a black belt.

2. Volunteer Meeting that was scheduled for tonight is canceled

Sorry for the late notice! I forgot it was Mother’s Day today, and will be unavailable tonight. I will reach out to those who signed up to volunteer via email tomorrow with details on how you will be able to assist with the job for which you signed up.

3. School-Owned instrument turn in and Summer Rental Information

All Milwee school-owned instruments MUST be turned between Friday, May 13th and Friday, May 20th. We need to complete end of the year inventory and instrument inspection before school is out and before we can re-check out instruments for the summer. If you need help making arrangements to turn in your school-owned instrument, please email me for assistance.

Summer Rental for all school owned instruments is $50 (Covers June, July and first half of August) – OR – you have the option to pay for next year’s annual rental fee in full at the “early bird” rate of $125. The early bird rental rate would pay for your instrument rental through next May 2023.

You will need to complete a new instrument rental form and contract for either Summer or the full 2022-2023 school year before a school-owned instrument can be rented and taken home for the summer.

4. IOA Field Trip - Trip Date is next Saturday, May 14th

Thank you for everyone who signed up for the trip! If you signed up to be a group chaperone, you’re in! We have room for all Chaperones who signed up and paid to attend.

*IMPORTANT* – All chaperones MUST be signed up and approved as an SCPS DIVIDEND (Volunteer Program with background check) in order to chaperone.
This process is SUPER QUICK and EASY – it takes less than 5 minutes to fill out the online application. You MUST complete this form by Wednesday, as it takes 24-48 hours to receive approval.
